She is currently the Owner of Walgren Counseling, PLLC, which she started in 2011, and an Adjunct Professor for the University of North Carolina, Charlotte Department of Social Work. She has been involved in multiple research studies for the treatment of ALS patients and was a member of the team that was first in the country to be granted Disease Specific Care Certification in ALS by The Joint Commission. She has presented at the International Motor Neuron Disease Association findings on research done while working with patients diagnosed with ALS. Ms. Walgren has also presented multiple conferences on various different topics of a medical, psychological and resource nature.
Kristy’s professional experience includes work with adults and youth diagnosed with serious mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar, and schizophrenia. She also has experience working with individuals and family members who have been diagnosed with a serious and life-threatening medical condition and all that goes along with such a diagnosis, ie; adjustment related depression and anxiety, end-of-life care planning, care-giver stress, marital issues, and parenting issues to name just a few.
The focus of therapy is strength-based and solution-focused. It is my belief that the reason people seek therapy is to improve the current situation. While we may not be able to change the circumstances, we can definitely change the way we view the current set of circumstances, which will have an impact on our happiness and may open our mind to other options.
